Outlook 2003 problems with e mail setup

I recently purchased a dell desktop with windows XP and Outlook 2003.  when going in to set up my email account, i put in that it is a pop3 server and try to test the configuration and I get a message that reads, "the specified server was found, but there was no response from the server"

I have checked that i have the right configuration, as the same configuration works on a laptop I have that has Windows XP and Outlook 2000.  I use bresnan. net, and my POP3 server is mail.bresnan.net as is the SMTP.  I am clueless as to what to do to get it to work, so that I can get the e mail to work.

I operate on a small LAN with currently only two computers hooked up, and everything is hard wired .  What can I do? or try?  Appreciate any help I can get

Make sure the Account is setup exactly like the other PC, one typo and it won't work.  In fact, Export the Account from the PC that works to a file and then copy that to a floppy diskette or CD (or whatever removeable media you have) and then take that to the new PC, copy it to the hard drive and then Import the Account to your new PC.  That will assure you have the identical setup.

As a side note, exporting the "Account" to a file on the hard drive is a good idea for backup purposes.  If you ever encounter a problem you can just import the Account to Outlook and not have to manually recreate it.  I have mine in the My Documents folder and when I do periodic backups that file is also backed up on a disc.  I also do the same thing with my Contacts (address book) folder.

How do you export account details from Office Outlook? I have Outlook XP/2002. Import/export has an option to import email accounts, but as far as I can tell will only export contents from personal folders? I cannot find anything about expoerting email accounts in the help file either.

I have Outlook 2000, don't know if 2003 has the same options, but it's been carried through on O.E. 6.

Go to Tools/Accounts in Outlook.  Mine has options for both "Import" and "Export".

I am having the same problem and receiving the same error message when I run a test (as Cheyswede).  I contacted my ISP and I can send/receive through their webpage.  I followed directions from Microsoft webpage to setup email for my ISP, Comcast, and it still did not work.  Any luck on your side?

I have a Dimension 4600 with Microsoft XP Professionals and Outlook 2003.  I operate on a LAN with only one computer.  Can anyone be of assistance?  Thank you.

What I ended up doing was deleting the entire Norton antivirus software that was installed with my computer.  Evidently there was some sort of conflict which was not allowing the email to connect.  I do not use Norton, and I have Mcafee on my computer, so I am not familiar with the Norton software.  There may be a fix through Norton, but I do not know what it is.

Anyway, when I uninstalled the Norton Software, my problem with outlook went away.

Thank you for the prompt reply.  I do not use Norton but I do have McAfee installed.  Do you think maybe I should try uninstalling, then setup email, then reinstalling?  Or maybe I can just disable the security settings on McAfee then setup email.  I will let you know if any of this works.  Thanks again.
