VWDRV,

Thank you for visiting the Dell Community Forum.

You may want to post more information such as a specific description of the problems you are having with the help files; this may help someone provide applicable technical or trouble-shooting advice.

If no one has any specific advice, you may want to try uninstalling and then reinstalling Word and Excel to see if that alleviates the problem.

Or try detect and repair in the help menu.

I had always been able to have the Assistant 'active' while at the same time able to pick whether I want to use the Assistant or the Index--interchangeably...Now, it says--in order to use the Index, the Assistant must be turned off......

Details of problem: 1-I'm forced to access Help Index through the Office Assistant...2-I can't always get to the Index--even through the Assistant)....3-The Index format is different and one section is not in alpha order....4-It has quite a delay in bringing up the Index--(like it forgot where it put it)...

In Dec, 03, I installed 3 critical updates---one of which was KB824145----I had read somewhere that this update can cause "Help" to 'act up'.....this update (KB824145) required:  a) KB811630 to have been done in order for 'Help' to work--(I did KB811630 back in Feb,03.....b)  possible re-install of 329115--(it's listed on my computer as having been installed by Dell 12/02 prior to shipping the computer to me---I have not re-installed it).....

My questions are---1--Do I have to re-install 329115 ......2--If I do, must I un-install it first....3--Does a newer critical update perhaps remedy this problem thus eliminating the need to re-install 329115.....

I ask #3 about a newer update because, my scan shows me I need to install 3 new updates---KB832894; KB832483; KB828028......I haven't found any reference so far that any of these includes a fix for the "Help" issue (eliminating the need to redo 329115)...

In regard to "Detect and Repair"----I see it offered, but have hesitated from trying it....Would like a little more info on just what it does and doesn't do.....ie---does it touch your files?...does it take you through steps to figure out the problem--or does it just 'do it' on it's own?

I'm trying to find the path of least resistance and don't want to create a bigger problem.......Would rather err on the side of caution than jumping in with both feet.....

Hope this helps fill in the gaps.......I have Dell Dimension 2300 with Win XP Home; Word and Excel 2000 (factory installed)....Thanx in advance for any ideas / suggestions etc.........
