Read Only in Word 2000

I have a word document that is read only. How do I unlock it so that I can make changes?

Right-click on the unopened file, choose "properties" from the menu that appears, and uncheck the "read-only" check box. Click apply and click OK.

As a workaround try opening the document as "read only" and then save it under another name.

The default Word template file, normal.dot may be corrupt. Close Word.  Enable Show all Files in the Windows Explorer.  Click on Start/Find/Files or Folders.  Enter normal.dot in the Named Box.  The Look In Box should read C:\.  Delete or rename all files found.  When Word is reopened, a new normal.dot file will be rebuilt to the default settings.
