recovering deleted text

My father, who is new to computing, was writing a huge MS Word file and he mistakenly selected all text (by using Ctrl + A) and then deleted the selected text (by using the back space. He then closed the file and MS Word.

Is the deleted text somewhere on the hard-drive?

The document that he was working on still exists but it is a massive size (over 2 Megs) even though the only text that it contains is the letter "m"; and there are no images or anything else visible. What is in all of this space?

I have looked at the Clipboard but it says that it is empty.

Help

esb4u,

If Word was set to make automatic backups of documents you may be able to resurrect an older version. It will have the extension .wbk. If Word did not do that, the contents are gone.

To set Word to make an automated backup go to Tools|Options|Save tab and check "Always create backup copy."

If you did not have an automatic backup you might still have a chance--depending on how important the document is. If you have not already reformatted or defragmented the disk you might be able to get a good computer expert to try to recover the data. It is still there on your hard drive but there is no way for ordinary people to recover it. This will not be cheap.
