are you sure you aren't missing a plugin, such as java?  Try installing any missing plugin.  If that doesn't work, go into the add/remove programs applet.  Click on the Windows Components tab, and remove Internet Explorer.  Obtain a fresh EXE for either IE 6 or IE 7 from Microsoft's website for reinstallation.
