Starting Outlook 2003 opens MS Word automatically

When I start Outlook 2003, Word automatically opens (full screen and in a separate window).  In Tools, Options, Mail Format, I have the box 'use Word 2003 to edit email messages' checked.
 
When I uncheck the box, Word doesn't open separately.  But I've been using Outlook this way for a long time with Word as my email editor and I don't want to lose the capability.
 
I have Win XP Pro, Office 2003.

Add/Remove Programs --> Microsoft Office --> Change --> Repair
 
The process WINWORD.EXE should open when Outlook opens but not the window. This could signify an error in the program or the registry.
