System Restore: Back-up Question

Have an Inspiron 600 that I had to recently do a total system restore on...it called for me to back up all files and I followed instructions accordingly and backed up everything. My question is--and it may be a dumb one at that---where is all this back up information at? Is it stored on my computer somewhere? Or was I suppose to back everything up on an actual hard disc (cd)? HELP! I obviously did not back up my files on an actual disc and need to get some pictures off one of our files. What can I do?

Using Microsoft backup, when clicking on "Backup" tab after starting the program, you are given a window to select what folders and files to backup. At the bottom left side of the window, allows you to choose the location for your stored backup. There you can select what media or location to backup your folders and files.  "Programs>accessaries>system tools>backup"
