Unable to play a DVD. Error with display or driver

When I try to play a DVD using PCFriendly or InterVideo I receive errors that do not allow me to play the DVD. PCFriendly states "Cannot render video. Please check your graphics drivers to ensure they support the latest version of DirectX."
InterVideo states "Create Overlay failed. Please lower your screen resolution or color depth and try again."
I have lowered my screen resolution to 800X600 and am only using 16 bit color. I have updated my video and audio drivers to the most recent available for Windows 2000. I have also updated to use Direct X version 8.
I even installed InterActual software that comes with the DVD and that won't even allow playback.

Any suggestions to help me enable DVD playback on my Dell system?

Thanks

I was browsing the forums, and came across an error I've seen before, and decided to share my knowledge of the topic.  I ran into the same error on an IBM ThinkPad, and the problem isn't a M$ issue (although their the easiest to blame!)

The "Create Overlay Failed" error occurs when an application has disabled a portion of DirectX.  Try running "dxdiag" from the Start > Run menu, and see if there are any errors with DirectX. Check the "display" tab, and check for errors in the "notes" section.

In my clients' case, they ran a product called Proxy which is used for the help desk staff to "shadow" the user and take control of their PC (similar to Symantec's PC Anywhere) and any product that does the same thing may cause the same error.

There are two solutions I looked at - one was to stop the ProxyHost service (or PCAnywhere) before launching the DVD software, and the other was to create a batch file to disable it, launch the DVD player, then restart it the service when it was closed. The second solution works better, but is trickier to set up.  It also only works if you launch the DVD player from the shortcut, not by the "AutoRun" feature of Windows.

Thanks for the tip on Proxy. It worked perfectly after I stopped the proxy service. What a relief!
