Unable to Update Office XP

When trying to update Office XP, I get the following error:

Error! Unable to check for updates on this computer Help

The Office Update site is unable to check for updates on this computer.
This may be happening because of one of the following reasons:

You do not have administrative privileges for this computer.
There is a network problem and the detection catalog used by the Office
Update site failed to download. Go back to the Downloads home page and try
running detection again.
Windows Installer patch files (.MSP files) from previously applied Office
updates are missing from the \Windows\Installer hidden directory on your
computer. MSP files are stored on your computer after update installation
completes because they need to be referenced for future update operations.
If the files are missing you will not be able to apply Office updates. You
may also be unable to uninstall Office products as a result of the same
problem. Please contact Microsoft Product Support for assistance.
You installed Office updates in the past and then upgraded from Windows
Installer version 1.0 to Windows Installer version 1.1. For more
information see the KB article Windows Installer May Prompt for Install
Source if Unavailable.

I have tried all the solutions suggested above, but still cannot update.   I keep emailing Microsoft Support, but they have not replied (other than an automated response).

Thanks, m

Check for & disable firewalls like Zone Alarm, cookie blockers, popup stoppers, etc.

That won't help.  There's another thread on the same problem and the only suggestion that seemed to work was to call MSFT for help.

I haven't done that - still looking for a workaround.

It's worth checking for anyway, as is disabling anti virus and lowering security settings. Another thing to note: sometimes the Office Update site is down. Solution for that is to wait and try again later.

After having the same problems I went tripping thru MS. This led me to a clean-up utility. I've downloaded and installed but have not uninstalled anything with it yet. One odd thing is other then being listed in my programs it shows up nowhere, I would have expected the URL in my history, but it's not there.

Anyway, this can be found by searching MS for "KB295823". There are 2 versions, msicu.exe and msicuu.exe. As limited as my knowledge is, I would appreciate someone looking at these and posting back as to their usefulness.

MSL,

Those files don't apply to this thread, which is dealing with problem accessing Office updates. They are used when one is unable to install either Office XP or Office 2000, and are used only on systems which are using Microsoft Installer 1.1, so they will not work on Windows XP systems, which use Installer 2.0.

Denny,

Thank You. I am aware that this thread, and the thread Can't Update Office XP that "yonge" refered to, deal with the problems of accessing Office updates. The KB article I refer to was found thru links which started at the same error message posted to begin this thread.

I did receive "This patch package could not be opened. Contact..." error when trying to access help in "Access".

The KB article does say the "(Windows Installer CleanUp) utilities are not supported where Microsoft Windows Installer 2.0 or later is installed". I ran a search and found the msi.dll file in C:\I386 and C:\Windows\System32, version 2.0.2600.1106. This utility gave me about 15 different things I could uninstall. From Dell|Support to Windows installer CleanUp. I proceeded to uninstall Office XP then reinstalled to the same location. When I checked for updates there are 11 that need to be installed. Tomorrow I will do this and see if I can determine which update is causing the problem by installing them individually. Not bad for something that will not work.

A note for those interested: This did not uninstall the short cuts in "All Programs". The KB Article does state to "install (reinstall) Office to the same folder to which it was originally installed...".

If anyone has another suggestion how to fix this I do have a notebook with the same error.
