Word 2000(works suite) CD key
When reinstalling my Word 2000 from the Works CD, I was asked for the CD key, but the one on my certificate of authenticity(attached to the Works Suite Media Envelope) won't work-this stuff came with my computer from the factory. It says "Product ID" also, not CD Key or Product Key.

Great posting - exactly fit my problem - but when I called Dell they wouldn't help. It's not like I'm trying to rip anyone off here, just trying to get the product as delivered (and paid for!!) to work.

This code may be defined as product key, I.D. key code or 25-character key code. In Karell's post, she defines it as product key. I am assuming they are one in the same relative to this issue. The terminology has varied from post to post. Shown below is a listing taken from Karell's post covering the applications for which Dell is legally authorized to furnish a generic code for reinstallation purposes. Dell will provide this code at no charge once they have verified ownership of the system. I obtained a generic code from Dell at no charge by calling Dell Software Support at 800-433-9005.
In order to get a generic product key you must contact Dell Tech Support. Tech Support must verify who you are, and that you own the system. Dell can *only* provide product keys for the following software:
-->Office 97 - All Versions
-->Works Suite 1999
-->Works Suite 2000
-->Works Suite 2001
-->Office 2000 Academic
-->Office 2000 - Pro Version
-->Windows 95 - All Versions
-->Windows 98
-->Windows 98 Second Edition
-->Windows Millennium
-->Windows NT 4.0
-->Windows 2000 - Professional
-->Windows 2000 – Small Business Server
-->Windows 2000 Server/Advanced Server
-->WinDVD Software DVD Player

I have the same problem, but with a twist - I uninstalled Word because it had quit working altogether, thinking that I could easily reinstall from the disk. (Obviously we don't get any warning that we can't reinstall without the code!)
I've seen many posts that say that Dell support will provide a generic code, but I've had my system for 2 years! I can't even get to support on the phone, because I didn't pay for extended support.
Are there any options for me besides formatting and starting from scratch? I am not willing to purchase another copy, because I already paid for one.
Thank you in advance for any help!

Any reluctance you may have in taking the Paid Support phone option is understandable but can be viewed in this context. Charges cannot made against your credit card unless YOU provide the card number and expiration date.

This time when I called, I didn't choose the "Software Problems" option from the menu. I chose the "Enter Your Express Service Code", and got help right away! I was not asked for payment at all. I had to verify my Service Tag, my name, address, phone and e-mail, then he gave me a number to input, and waited to make sure it was going to work. It worked on the first try, and I am so glad! I use Word a lot, but I figured I would be using Notepad or Wordpad from now on, since I couldn't get it back. I am one happy camper!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
BTW, I love my Dell, too!
