mine does exactly the same thing , and Ive tried everything , i have got my fault down to the video processing or the firmware has messed up - I am unable to do a factory reset nothing seems to happen.
I think mines due for the trash cause I am not getting any answers and im pretty sure its out of warranty. I dont think I will get a dell projector again tho as mines been nothing but trouble.
I hope you find the answer u need , but im pretty sure its gonna be send it to this place for repair and with the cost probably wont be worth it.
I have some good news - The following advice and information I am about to give must only be performed if you have electronics knowledge and will NOT accept any responsability what so ever if something goes wrong and please be carefull!!!.
unscrew the top cover and stay well clear of the lamp housing and optics around the lens system.
carefull move the top cover to expose the printed circuit board which runs along the back (its where all the conectors go) on this pcb you will find 3 large chips or IC. 2 of which are made by analuge devices and the other is by pictoworks i think it was (its silver)
Now power the unit up , and make sure you have the top cover covering where all the light comes from (i cannot stress the point enough) and be VERY carefull of the mains supply.
Directly above where the mains cable goes in on the pcb i mentioned u will find a large square chip with analogue devices written on it thats the chip thats giving u the problem with the back end of a plastic screw driver push down on the centre of this chip with light force and see if the picture corrects itself if it does then you have what is called a dry joint on that chip. the heat that is generated by the lamp can sometimes cause the solder to go "dry" and thus cause a bad connection. From this point on you will need to get someone with a very steady hand and who is good at soldering surface mount components. In my case I have this ability and it fixed mine now it runs perfect accept for the rainbow affect lol.
I hope this has been some use to you - or you could of course give it to someone who knows whats what and ask them to try the above for you.
Good luck and remember if you dont know what your doing LEAVE IT ALONE !.
