Cannot operate on the device because it is a 'META MEMBER'
Hello.
I am trying to split an SRDF group that I did not create. When I do I get an error that one of the devices is a Meta Memeber.
symrdf -sid 2489 -f group_24.dev -rdfg 24 split
Execute an RDF 'Split' operation for device file
'group_24.dev' (y/ ) ? y
An RDF 'Split' operation execution is in progress for device
file 'group_24.dev'. Please wait...
Cannot operate on the device because it is a 'META MEMBER'
I am not sure how that can happen. The device in question is in a consistent state but when I do a show dev on it it does indeeed say it is a Meta member.

symrdf -sid 2489 -f group_24.dev -rdfg 24 query
N/A 1BD4 RW 0 0 RW 28F4 WD 0 0 A.. Consistent
symdev -sid 2489 show 1bd4
Device Symmetrix Name : 1BD4
Device Serial ID : N/A
Symmetrix ID : 000190102489
Device Configuration : RDF1+Mir (Meta Member,
Non-Exclusive Access)
So my question is how could this have been SRDF'd from the start since it is a meta member? Like I said before I did not set this group up originally.
Thanks!

AFAIK you will indeed see all symdev's and not just all META heads. so look up the META head of this META member by issuing the "symdev show (META member)"command and try your split command again against the META head.

Hi there
Ok, so either a configuration change has occurred, which the symcli host is unaware of, or else you have held devices, of which this meta is one of them (probably due to a snap, etc).
On the host you ran the symrdf command from perform the following and send the output please.
1) symcfg discover
2) symdev -sid 2489 list -held
3) symdev show 1BD4
When did this RDF group last sync/split successfully?
Thanks
James.

Not sure when the last split was, like I said I did not set this up originally. I just inherited it![]()

1BD3 is your meta head and you should be invoking your command against this and not a meta member (hyper)
James.

Thanks James and RRR I think I have it now.
I am still in the process of learning SRDF and started off using disk groups and then made the switch device files and got way confused.
I guy I work with told me to look for the "RI Inv Tracks 0" and "R2 Inv Tracks 0" and that will tell me what my Meta heads are.
Thanks for your help!
Brian
