It would allways be good to have a saparate dedicated SQL server since a lots of processing happens on SQL while using EX. You need to be careful about your processing power and disk space and take help from PS to decide on this but I would prefer a dedicated SQL server.
Please check EX Documentation for more details. EX will not have problem if SQL is local or on another server provided there is enough connectivity, permissions, disk space, Disk speed and CPU for EX to do the job.
A lot of companies buys processor licenses so they like one dedicated SQL sever, EX should not have problems with it. Any known limitations would be in the Compatibility guide (MESSAGING) and Install Guide.
