User Cache Update Taking 8-10hrs
I have experienced this issue twice in the last week.
Issue:
User Cache update process kicks off and takes anywhere from 8-10hrs to complete. The message...
This item may take some time to retrieve. You can wait or cancel this request.
This message will stay on the screen for up to 30 seconds at a time, go away for a few seconds and them come back up the entire time the update process runs.
Please note that I have experienced this twice this past week while I have been remote. I have not been on my company LAN. I have been connecting via high speed cable modem via a VPN connection.
Could User Cache think I am on a low bandwidth connection and is updating that much slower? I calculated that if it were updating my entire mailbox it was doing less than 5mb per hour.
I am on EmailXtender Client version 4.81.655.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The way user cache works is it could differentiate between priority calls and background sync. When you click on a message that makes a priority call, if UC cannot find this message in the local cache it would try to connect UC server that is mentioned in the config.xml file in your profile. User Cache server will give this call priority and fetch back message for your from EmailXtender Server.
While the message is being retrieved for you, you will see a pop-up message on the screen showing you that there is a process that is working on your request, should you think you clicked on a message that is not needed to be retrieved for now and you need to move on you can click on the button in the pop-up to move on.
Please remember UC is not only traping open calls but also the calls that are responsible for showying you the preview in preview pane.
For normal sync UC will be doing the sync behind the scenes and it depends on few different factors that how quickly sync will be done for you, there factors could be how bandwidth in your network is divided, how request is passing through firewalls, is GZip compression enabled, Timeout Settings on UC server and so on. A nice idea is to fully sync your laptop when you are on network and they do rest of the updates in offhours when network traffic will be less, should you need something urgently then it would do that for you on the fly as we discussed.
There are few things that are documented in the UC Documentation that might be helpful to you.
How this helps,
Raj

Thanks for the reply on this issue I am experiencing. I still don't think I have an answer to the overall issue. Why would my user cache do a 8-10hr sync twice in one week while I am remote? For some of your points in your response, I do not have preview pane turned on and I have very minimal messages in my mailbox. Most of my mail (80+%) is in the User Archive Folder. When this 8-10hr sync process happened, I was sitting in my inbox with under 5 emails in the inbox, all of which were read. Something made my user cache start up and basically do a complete sync of my User Archive Folder as I watched the C:\Documents and Settings\magens\Application Data\EMC\IMSCache\mailbox directory grow and grow.
As for the User Documentation of User Cache, I will need to get a copy of the documentation as I was never provided with anything. Is there any document or chapter within any document, I should be more interested in?
Basically, I want to understand and better control the User Cache software on my laptop and any end user laptop to ensure proper background synchronization and access to their messages both online and offline.
Thanks

I will try to divide your reply in few questions and answers:
Why would my user cache do a 8-10hr sync twice in one week while I am remote?
Rajan: If once your have mailbox fully sync with UserCache, then idealistically UC should be checking for updates every 60 minuts (default). This setting can be controlled in the latest release so it would also depend on the version you are running. Still I have seen few things like Anti Virus or Disk Corruption causing User Cache to sync again because database its using on your machine is locked or corrupt.
When this 8-10hr sync process happened, I was sitting in my inbox with under 5 emails in the inbox, all of which were read
Rajan: UC not only looks at what you have in your inbox, but it checks everything that is opened in the outlook using MAPI profile. Which will include all the folders that are in outlook at that stage.
Something made my user cache start up and basically do a complete sync of my User Archive Folder as I watched the C:\Documents and Settings\magens\Application Data\EMC\IMSCache\mailbox directory grow and grow.
Rajan: As I mentioned earlier this could be cause due to few factors e.g. another product on client machine using MAPI32.dll, AV Software Scanning User Cache Directories, Dick Corruption and list goes on.
Few other things that might help you:
1. If you are not running Outlook in Cache mode, start running it in Cache mode that will offload some work from user cache if you configures user cache to cache everything instead of only shortcutted messages.
2. If you configures UC to cache everything do it before you shortcut mailbox and make sure you are using Outlook in cache mode, this way less traffic for sync and UC will sync everything in one shot from local OST.
3. UC should not resysnc everything again and again once, it should only do the updates every 60 minutes ideally. Is its syncing again and again, there is a way to run on logging for user cache to view and troubleshoot.
4. Make sure OST files are not getting corrupt and recreated from Exchange because that might force UC to check every single message again.
Documentation is part of all the install that you download from Powerlink.emc.com, you can download supported version of user cache from powerlink and have a look at all the documentation.
Still if you think there is some problem on your client machine that does not make sence support is the way to go, contact EMC Support for analysis and troubleshooting of the issue.
Thanks,
Raj
