When old EX volumes will be managed by ES1 ?
Hi,
I know that actual version couldn't manage old EX volumes created by EX versions older than 4.81.
At the beginning I thought it was only sufficient to connect ES1 to an EX updated to 4.81, but when I tried in my office I found I couldn't retrieve message from volumes created before may 2008, probably the date after which upgrade to 4.81 was done.
In fact SourceOne in compatibility guide is specified that EX compatibility is related to archives versions, not only EX server one.
We have a lot of customer that're using EX since many years, but I could offer ES1 till there'll be this limitation.
Recently ES1 6.5 SP1 is available, but no updates was done regarding this issue.
Is it planned by ES1 development team a final solution about this issue in next release ?
It's important for us to give an answer to our actual EX customers when it'll be possible to upgrade to ES1.
It's a pity ES1 is not able to retrieve messages that EX can manage without problems.
If anybody in contact with ES1 team could investigate about new coming feature reguarding old EX volumes I wll really appreciate
Thanks
Bye
Andrea

Hi Bryan, I think we met at Cork during ES1 boot camp last febrary,
I met Michael Brown recently, during an ES1 seminar in Milan and he told me the same thing. ES1 should work with all EX volumes.
We're a little company very qualified in Backup/archiving/Virtualization software expecially : EmailXtender (since was owned by OTG), DiskXtender, NetWorker, VMWare.
I attend the ES1 course in May and I'm certified too ( last July 9th).
We've a lot of customer using EX, so before going to offer ES1 during next Autumn, I wanted to be sure about EX compatibility.
We've in our office a long term EX installation so I tried to connect it to our ES1 installation.
I've already install last post SP1 patch 6.51.1131.
ES1 primary service account is a member of local exAdmin group of EX server and I also assigned db_datareader access to EX db as suggest in last 6.5 SP1 release notes ( bottom of page 18).
We can succesfully connected and mapped our EmailXtender ( ver 4.81.1147) Archives into ES1.
ES1 Web search and retrieval activity works fine for messages newer than 1 May 2008.
Instead an error occour when you try to open a message before 1 May 2008. These are the errors related to corresponding actions:
Web search preview fails : An error occurred while retrieving the message for preview.
opening message fails: an error occured retrieving the request file
OWA Extension retrieval fail,OA fails : Error Code: 0x86042E16, Folder: ls emailxtender archivio Unable to Find Message Msg Id: 496C9736DB12E8E5FF5F7AC6 (0x86042E16) [DocManageService, CExProviderGW.cpp(678).CExProviderGW::GetMsgByIdHelper]
Obviously I tried the same using EX Web Search and I could open any message before that date.
As suggested by Michael Brown I open a Service Request (SR30711368), but it was rejected because our installation has no SVC and also lab test are not supported for Partner only.
I thought it was interesting to investigate anyway, but SR was closed.
I'm preparing SVC for my company. I thought it was excessive to open a SVC for only a 5 users installation, but if it's needed to get support I'll do it.
In reality we use our office installation to study, simulate and troubleshoot our customer installations, these are our real targets.
We're doing some ES1 deployment for completely new customer, but by the end of year we wanted to offer ES1 upgrade to our old EX customers.
I hope to get support after SVC approval.
Thank you Brian
I'll post the solution and the problem explanation when I find it

Hi everybody,
I give you the last update.
Recently it's available ES1 hotfix2 6.51.1159.
After I applied this update I can finally retrieve old emails shortcuts and preview body contents in Web Search.
If you look at hotfix 2 SDRs list in the readme.html file there's a SDR which is probably the one that resolved the problem described in this post:
I regret my previous SR was rejected, but this is the proof that EX coexistance problem with old contents was already known by ES1 engineering.
So now I can finally offer ES1 to all our EX customers without reservations.
