I don't know about the 5K80 and the 7K60 specifically. I can tell you there is an incredible difference between my 40GB 5400 RPM drive and the 7k60 I replaced it with. I was so impressed with the difference I bought two more. best price .. mwave.com ....
LOL! My first one was around 250, Second one was 235, third one was 229. They change prices to reflect the competition I guess. I was going to order from zipzoomfly but read some bad reviews of them and they were unwilling to deal with an address that was different from where my credit card bill is sent. Mwave was more accomodating even if I did have to jump through a hoop or two to get it done.
What did you have to do to "get it done"? I'm just wondering because I want to decide where to buy it from, if I do...I may buy 40 GB or 60 GB 5400 RPM drive, depending if I can save up enough money :D.
I haven't tried out the 5k80, but I have a 7K60 on order (from ZZF) and will have it in my machine before the week is over. From what tomshardware.com has to say about the 7k60, I have some very expectations about what this drive will deliver beyond what Dell's 40GB, 4200RPM drive-ette ever did.
I happen to have a spare 40GB 5400RPM drive straight from Dell lying around at the moment. I'm jus' sayin...
OH MY GAWD .. you will LOVE the difference .. Trust me dude. If you are considering any other drive as a purchase ... you should consider just offing yourself now. You will be sorely disappointed with the performance of anything less...
I had the 40GB 5400 RPM and what a dog by comparison. If you can afford the 235 the wait until you can .. DON"T settle for something less than the 7K60.. you will not regret it..
wait - is that 40g 5400 mentioned above one of the 5K80's??
no doubt the 7k does noticeably better than the standard issue 5400, but just saw 20g 5K80 for $100 (40g for $141) , and even the hitachisite says 7K is only about 15% faster (i think) than the 5K80 (itself %15 faster than avg drives, in theory or something). so roughly twice as much for more g but how much more speed . . .
and also isn't there something about the smaller drives being faster (and let me be the first to say: "not that i've ever had to use that line")
The 5400rpm 5k80 does come in 20, 40 and 80gb versions. Check out
zipzoomfly's listings for an example. Hitachi must not be using the numbers/characters to designate the drive size as the 7k60 implies.

Anyway, I've pretty much decided that when I have time for a proper clean install, I'll get the 5K80.

Unfortunately, everyone that I have checked... 4sure.com, ZipZoomFly, and mwave.com are all out of stock on the 7K60 right now.

Yes, you are correct. I missed that the first time that I looked at it.
