Adding a hard drive...
I have a dim. 2400 Pent.4@ 2.3 gHz. Used to have a WD 40 G. HDD, a friend gave me an old 80 G. Seagate barracuda (that won't boot) chkdsk checks out good (and it's still got 1 1/2 warranty left on it). I'm now running on a 6 G. Should I add the new to the system as a slave?
I'll keep reading, but meanwhile, I'd like to ask what is the best configuration and how do I do it?
I'm gonna go read about jumper configuration right now.

It's easier to install a second hard drive, instead of replacing the primary C:/ drive and reloading windows, etc,.
The D-2400 will support two hard drives, but you will need the bracket for the additional hard drive and a three connector IDE ribbon cable.
Dimension 2400 second hard drive installation.
You require a second hard drive bracket kit for the D-2400, this can be purchased for $7.99 from here.
The three connector 80 wire, 18" IDE cable can also be purchased from Centrix for .25c.
There are no instructions for installing a second IDE/EIDE hard drive in a D-2400, but as the D-4600 has the same case and chassis, you can use the D-4600 instructions for the physical installation.
Set the second hard drive's jumpers to "Cable Select" and connect it to the middle connector on the cable.
How to install the hard drive.
After installing the drive, enter the setup and check that the hard drive is set to Auto [on]. To enter the setup, tap the F2 key after a restart of the computer.
Use XP's disk management to partition and format the drive.
These are generic instructions for installing an additional hard drive using Windows XP Disk Management, they are by Seagate, but apply to all makes.

Thanks again for a great reply :smileyhappy:
However, I am getting only a blinking cursor at boot with the replacement HDD plugged in.
I've searched this forum and the best answer I've found was to run the diagnostics cd. Should I run the cd in the dual drive configuration? I have tested the drive already (by itself); running chkdsk, it seems it found a couple of problems, then successfully ran chkdsk /r.
Any suggestions?

If both the hard drives are recognized the setup [BIOS], you should be able to run the diagnostic's CD on a dual drives configuration. Run the extended test, read, write, verify, on the hard drive, not the quickie express.

Well, after reading more at the manufacturer's website (seagate), I did as suggested. At anytime when I had the new HDD plugged in, I would get the same blinking cursor, to make things worse, I would have a really hard time getting my native HDD to boot. To the point where it gave a message that the drive has attempted to boot unsuccessfully (a certain # of times) and could become damaged (actually that happened twice). So, I installed the new HDD by itself with the windows disk in and miraculously, it gave me a bios screen where I hit F12 and booted to the cd. The HDD passed all tests, so I chose to reformat. I've been using it just fine.
When I started it up this morning, I got one of those xxxx.exe is missing or corrupted messages. I rebooted and it booted just fine.
Any words of wisdom here are welcome. I would like to have the other HDD installed, too, but I'm starting to get just a bit nervous about continuing :smileysurprised:
Thanks in advance

Are you trying to install the 80gb hard drive as a second hard drive or as the primary C:/ drive?
If it is as a second hard drive, disconnect the 80gb and see if the system boots normally.
Whenever an error message is posted, please try to remember the exact text of it.
