adding a second ide hdd to optiplex 260 sff

Hi,

please bear with me as I'm new at this stuff!

I have just got a cheap second hand dell optiplex 260 sff in order to run xp.

spec as follows:-

Dell optiplex 260 sff
pentium 4 @ 1.8 ghz
win xp
256mb ram
20gb ide hdd

Everything is running fine and dandy. I intend to gradually upgrade odd bits and pieces over time.

I have a second 40gb ide hdd from an old laptop which I have currently connected via usb. It works perfectly. I also have a second 20gb ide hdd sitting round doing nothing at the moment.

Is it possible to connect the 40gb ide drive internally using a 2 connector ide cable straight to the motherboard by replacing the existing single connector ide ribbon cable?

this would then let me run the second spare 20gb drive in the usb enclosure as a bonus.

thanks in advance

No, the Optiplex Small-Form Factor system does not support a second internal hard drive.

See here

The IDE 40-pin controller on the motherboard will support two IDE hard drives.

thanks for the response Bev.

the link appears to show the physical positioning of the existing drives but doesn't mention anything about the cabling/ide controller.

I do not require the floppy disk drive so have space to physically mount a second hdd. what I don't know is whether the ide interface on the motherboard will support a second ide drive working on cable select as a slave.
