Adding partitions to HD

On my new Inspiron 530 I have just the C:\ partition available for me to sue.  The D:\ partition is for the Dell recovery code, which is not a problem.

Ideally I would like to use a separate partition, (volume?), for my data to simplify both management and backup.

The appears to be a possible tool in Vista for partition management.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I could effectively split my C: space, (currently around 180+ Gb),  into two parts.  Not sure what drive letter would be allocated but I would assume that it would become E:\ and the DVD and card reader drives would be relabelled upwards by one letter.

Any suggestions or advice would be helpful, before I get too much data loaded.

How to create partitions.

You could also, use a non-destructive partitioning utility, like Symantec's Partition Magic or Acronis Disk Director.

From many other posts it appears that Partition Magic does not work and in fact may cause serious issues.

I really need to be sure exactly how the Vista utility works.  Is it actually worth setting up extra partitions for data and so on.   Goes against my instincts to  have everything on the C:\ drive but there again .....
