at boot two windows options...only one OS

At boot two windows OS options appear,  which one to boot to, I only have one OS.

This started after a failed attempt at installing a second copy of Windows on a USB drive (bored & curious). This failed and now the two windows option is still there, I reinstalled the OS to C drive but the option is still there.

How do I eliminate the non existant OS start option?

Thanks Randy

You didn't state what OS you have so I'll assume it is XP. The following will fix your problem:

1) control panel - advanced tab

2) Go to "startup and recovery (3rd in list) and click "settings" button

3) Make sure the "default OS " box shows the correct OS

4) Beside the "time to display list of operating systems" set the time to zero.

next time you boot, XP should come up automatically.

actually you just edit your boot.ini
go to where the previous poster indicated & click the edit button.

I have sp2 installed & my boot.ini looks like this:

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

if you don't have sp2 installed it will look the same bar the "noexecute=optin" part.

Ruellj, You forgot to include the word Systems after Control Panel. You can also get to the needed screen by right clicking My Computer and selecting Properties. There is another method of eliminating these unwanted Boot Paths. You go to Start/Run, then enter msconfig, Click the Boot.Ini Tab and then click check all boot paths. It will prompt you as to the invalid ones and suggest you delete them.
