Auto Play works sometimes

Hi:

I have a Dimension 4700 with duel drives. HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8163B and a Philips DVD + - RW DVD8631.

Sometimes every thing seems to be working and sometimes the “Auto Play” feature does not work in either drive, and I have a terrible time trying to get CD-ROM games to play. When they work they work in both drives, when they do not work they do not work in either drive.

I set the properties for both drives to prompt me when a disk is inserted and have tried setting it to open with a specific program.

I checked for updated drivers and it said no driver could be found that was better than the software already installed.

I found a firmware update for the DVD8631.

I ran the “Auto Play Repair Wizard” I found at a Microsoft site. What a waste of time that was. They should call it the “Auto Play Repair Apprentice” it has allot to learn. The CD I placed in the drives did not Auto Play and the wizard said every thing was OK.

I removed both drives from device manager, restarted and windows replaced them.

Any suggestions on how to repair these drives?

Hi Sjr,

One of the biggest problems we have seen lately with similiar issues has been Sonic`s DLA program.
If perhaps you have it, consider disabling it. Click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 13-0, article 12.

I have additional articles from Microsoft dealing with Autoplay in Section 100 of the same CD/RW link, starting at article 57, however many have had good luck the Repair wizard that failed for you.

Best Regards

God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones I do
and the eyesight to tell the difference.

I followed the instructions to disable DLA, but it did not resolve the issue.

Under Device Manager I’ve noticed I have a few things doubled,

for example I have two of the following:

Intel 82915G Express Chipset Family

Primary IDE Channel

Plug and Play Monitor

Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.00 GHz

System Board

Why do I have two Primary  IDE channels, don’t these control the drives?  Where is the secondary IDE channel?

I can open the game disks and even explore them but I have a allot of trouble getting them to run.

Also when I remove a game disk that did not run I get a warning box that says “MssCli.exe No Disk”, I have to click the cancel button over 50 times to make it disappear from both the DVD-ROM drive and the DVD-Burner drive.

I have the same DVD-ROM/DVD-RW setup as sjr2k. Just yesterday I noticed the same symptoms; no AutoPlay and very difficult access to CD-ROM contents, in general. I suspect that this behavior has been caused by the installation of the VW Ware Trial software on the day before. The search on the manufacturer's website revealed that this is program is known to disable the AutoPlay feature found in WinXP. I will try to look at the Registry settings (per Microsoft Knowledge Base article) to see if changes suggested there would correct the problem. Either way, I will let you know what's my final outcome.
