Backing up Quicken

Question

I have a brand new Dell with all of the latest stuff (I think), but I cannot figure out how to back up my Quicken files to a DVD.  What does it mean when you get the message that the files you have tried to back up are in a temporary place in Windows XP and that you should not forget to burn a CD.  Does that mean that the files did not back up on the DVD?  I paid almost $2000 for this Dell through Costco (selecting the latest, biggest, best, etc.) so you can assume in your answer that I probably have whatever the latest CD and DVD drives are.  I have two of those.  Thanks for your help.  I have no experience saving to or backing up to a CD or DVD drive.

How about some basics? What system and OS do you have? What model(s) drive(s) do you have in your system? Do you have some blank recordable compact discs to save your Quicken file to? What version of Quicken?

I have a Dell Dimension 8400 and  48x CD-RW?16X DVD +/- RW, DIM P.  I'm using Quicken Deluxe 2005, and I have DVD +RW discs available and some discs labeled Music CD-R.  I don't know when to use a CD and when to use a DVD when it's just data I want to save or back up.  Thanks

See the Intuit knowledge base article here. Note that it indicates the procedure is for backing up Quicken data to CD-R/-RW media but the process should be identical (assuming version 2005 has the capability of burning to recordable DVD media).

Just to clarify things, the Quicken utility uses the Windows burning wizard program, which cannot burn to DVD discs, so use a CD-RW. You don't want to waste a DVD for files that small anyway.

Another option I use, is to back-up to my hard drive and then every few day burn to a CD or DVD.  I also have a external hard drive where I can save to.

The difference between CD's and DVD's is the amount of space they have.  If you are backing up a large number of files, say 1 to 4 gig's, it might be better to use a DVD.  But if you are just backing up a small number of files, a CD would work fine.  Just remember, if you use a DVD and want to read it on another computer, that computer would need to have a DVD drive. Thanks to you both.  I just backed up Quicken using a CD and following the prompts, and it looks like things are fine.  I didn't know that some programs call of CD's and other need DVD's.  One last question, when I save on MS Word and Works, will I use a CD or a DVD?  Thanks!

BMF,As John stated above, she is using Windows XP built in burning program which does not support DVD media. To use DVD media she must use a third party burning program, Sonic, Nero, Roxio, etc...Best Regards God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway, the good fortune to run into the ones I do and the eyesight to tell the difference.
