ntest   dell does offer a  dell certified compatable 256 msata card ....they oriinally shipped prior systems notebooks and desktops with samsung pm830 256 gb msata cards ..... samsung msata are not currently available for resale   present invintory is being used by oem builders   I personally was able to source 2 new samsung 256gb msata (MZMPC256HBGJ-0001D1) via the internet out of Mambai india @ $350.00/ each  You can order a 256gb msata from dell spare parts Using the dell P/N MTT20  which is for a dell desktop XPS 8500SE   which also uses the same 256 gb msata card. Originally I had ordered one from dell but they kept substituting a Liteon Dell P/n V6PN8  (LMT256M3M) 256gb msata  for the samsung pm830 msata ...   even thou I specified no substitutions ....because of pricing I choose to send the dell one back and keep the samsung  pm830 256gb msata s..... I have configured 2 of my own  precision M4700s with them and one of my buddies with a liteon 256gb one both work good ...only difference is the samsung seems to have better read/write speeds over the liteon.....I personally have never tried a crucial msata but I have read other posts that state that they do infact work on the m4700 .Just a thought maybe your msata/wwwlan slot/ port is bad/damaged or possibly the msata allignment slot on card bottom has a burr or incorrectly notched  try filing out the notch on card a smidge to see if pins will properly allign...once you get the pin allignment the screw will hold it in place ,,,,just a thought only other choice is to get mb or daughter board replaced by dell.... Good luck I hope you get it working         MAC  ii

Hi ntest,

I’d suggest that you update your system with latest BIOS from the link below and then connect the mSATA drive to the WWAN slot and check for issue resolution.

Please let me know if this helps.

DELL-RAVI,

Thanks for the information and quick reply. My BIOS already was in A05 so this might not be the problem.

I am going to use ssd as a stand alone drive. Both Crucial and Mushkin are 256 GB. Currently, the BIOS is set as RAID on for SATA ( I tried ACHI as well). RAID on is the default factory setting when DELL sent me the computer. After I changed to ACHI, the ssd will not show up either and windows 7 will not boot (got BSOD). If I connect the ssd through a msata to sata converter and connect through USB, then it is recognized by Windows.

Thanks for the help.

You need to be more specific concerning the intended use of msata  ....How are your employing this ssd?   Stand alone drive?  in conjunction with Intell  RST/IRST  technology.?. Size of msata etc.... It makes a difference cannot make any suggestions or reccommends without knowing desired HD config and pert info

Glad to see msata is working in your setup.

I have a OCZ harddrive (512 gb) as the main drive, where the operating system located. I am trying to use the mSATA as my DATA drive. Sorry, it was misleading to state the mSATA would be stand alone.

Come to think about it. You have a Samsung mSATA. Maybe just the Crucial mSATA is not working with m4700.

Do you remember you have to change something in BIOS to use your mSATA card?

Thanks.

this is my HD config  I have a m4700 that Ihave 3 hard drive that are fully functional......1. 500gb ssd samsung 830 used as program drive  ( auto cad , gsi, adobe, photoshop etc) installed in original  primary hd bay  2. the spindle hd that came  originally installed I put in a  optical hd bay adaptor and use it for file ,storage, pict, music completed work ,backup ,etc  with  4 partions.   3.   I also purchased a 256 gb msata samsung  ssd and installed it in msata slot/gobi slot/  I have installed the os on this drive and use as a main boot drive with just os installed it give you about  230 gb  usable ... best of all worlds speed ,storage ,flexibility....you only have to change boot order in bios  to achieve this configuration  Great machine  a real workhorse my os is win 7 ultimate, 64 bit, 32 gb of  memory  this conf gives me 2 working drive without removing the optical drive . I only install the spindle drive when I want to backup or transfer files....works great

Question you state that you are going to use ssd as stannd alone ...originally I interpertated that you were trying to use msata ssd as stand alone   please clarify..

My  system originally shipped from fact with only a spindle drive, no ssd,....no raid , no intel RST, or IRST employed   need to know specifically what HD config are you trying to use  and what typed of HD you are using

Hi ntest,

I‘d advise that you re-flash the BIOS on your system as this will force reset the BIOS to defaults. So that you can check if the mSATA drive is getting detected on the system.

Also, I’d like you to check if the mSATA drive is getting detected in BIOS by referring to ‘Device information’ under ‘System Information’.

If you are not able to flash the BIOS on the system then restore the BIOS to defaults Please click on ‘Load Defaults’ button.

Please reply for any queries.

Ravi,

Thanks for the suggestion. I have re-flashed A05 a few times and BIOS still not detecting the mSATA drive.

I have tried MAC II's method and didn't work for me.

I think I will find a broadband card and try to put it in and see whether it works. If not, then my WWAN/mSATA interface might be the problem.

Thanks

Thanks for the reminder. The problem was with the BIOS and not the OS so drivers may not play a role yet. I did try to use the original DELL hard drive and not see any difference. Currently, I suspect either it is the mSATA slot or my mSATA drive is not good. I'll post here when I locate the problem.

Thanks very much for the help as always.

Hi ntest,

As I see that you have flashed the latest BIOS and still the mSATA drive is not detected in BIOS.

It could be an issue with the mSATA slot or mSATA drive. Please check with good WWAN card on that slot or different mSATA drive.

Please reply for any queries.
