Bricked DVD Drive

Question

I tried to update the firmware from Dell's driver updates for my notebook, but in the end it was bricked. The BIOS no longer recognizes it now that it probably has an incompatible firmware. The physical drive itself works, but the green light stays on all the time. Just has a bad flash. There has got to be a way to revive it. I know these drives started out with no firmware and was flashed using some sort of tool and software. Please help me unbrick it.

Not true. People have recovered from bad flashes. It's not impossible at all. I need to know what port it's on. I'm using an application called mtkflash which will allow me to flash whatever is at the end of that bus regardless if it's recognized by the BIOS or not, which is how I think manufacturers have done it. Remember, these drives started out empty and unrecognizable because it had no firmware in it. If they can do it, then so can I. Unfortunately the port isn't called SATA 1 or something like that. It's labeled as 'Modular Bay' in the BIOS. I'll try using mtkflash once more and see how it turns out.

You cannot 'flash' the drive if the system cannot recognize it. It is time to replace the drive.

Using mtkflash is a possibility.  You never mentioned it in your post.You didn't even tell us what the model of your notebook is.

It's an inspiron 1720. I need to know what is the right firmware and what port it's on (primary/secondary master/slave). Is 'Module Bay' Secondary Master?

I need someone to do me a favor. Can anyone with this drive go to start>run>msinfo32, and click Storage>SCSI and give me the information? thanks.
