Burning issue with E310 combo drive

My Dimension E310 (purchased Jan. 28, 06) with HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GWA4164B will not recognize a blank CD from either Windows Media Player or Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator Plat..  It was working fine but something happened the first of this year.  The only problem I have is with burning.
HELP PLEASE

Hi Madmax,

If you have not done so already, please consider the Dell firmware update listed here:

GWA 4164B

Best Regards!

Good Morning Predator,
I tried your fix and my install wizard said I had the same or lower version of the firm ware.  Any other ideas?  Do you thing the drive is messed up?

Hi Madmax,

Considering it is the 4164B drive, my gut feeling tells me it is the drive.
Click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 12, article 3 and try the Dell Diagnostic test on the optical drive.

Best Regards

Predator,
I ran the dell test, in fact I ran it on everything.  The tests say everything is working properly.  Have you ever used the windows meadia player burner?  If so, does it recognize the blank disk when you insert one?  What kind of burning software do you recommend?  There may be a conflict with my Roxio stuff.  It is just amazing that this happened all of a sudden, around the middle of Jan.  I use AVG virus software and it is up to date.  Is it possible that I have a bug anyway?
Thanks,
Mm07

Predator,
Yes I have the original cd for roxio and yes I have tried to uninstall and reinstall.  The WMP 11 may be the problem.  The time frame that the roxio started acting up was when I downloaded the update to WMP.  How do I revert back to WMP's earlier version?
By the way, I used Sonic DigitalMedia LE v7 last night and it burned a cd, but it is not the program roxio creator classic is.
I went to your web site and clicked on wma and found the instructions to revert back to ver. 10.  I am now back to ver. 10.  Thanks for your help in all this confusion.

Sunday 2-4-07.  It was the drive.  I changed it and everything works fine.
Thanks,
John

Hi MM07,

Yes I have used WMP from time to time and it does recognize a blank CD. I also use Nero and Roxio, my niece loves Music Match for creating her CD`s.
I prefer Nero, may I ask, do you have your software disc of the Roxio software and have you tried a "clean" uninstall / re-install of the software?
Also, I believe there is a conflict between Roxio`s software and WMP 11, many rolled back to WMP 10 and this helped.

Best Regards
