Can read CD/DVDs but can't write
Dimension 8400, with 2 drives, which worked fine for years. Then tech support worked on it by taking control of it online. Afterwards, I found that I my DVD write drive wouldn't write anymore, although it reads. When I tried to write, the computer just didn't recoginze that an empty disk is loaded in the drive.
I called tech support. They again took control of my computer online, said something had been turned off, and they fixed it. I did a test while I was on the phone with them and itt worked; I wrote to a disk.
But the first time I tried to write to a disk after the "fix" (which was a few months later) I found that it again wouldn't write or recoginze that there was a clean disk loaded. It will still read. Of course, by then, my support contract ran out.
Does anyone know what I need do to fix this?

Of simple things that could be turned off, the one that comes to mind is CD recording, which is in drive properties. Follow these instructions.

The recording tab on the drive looked exactly like the picture in the article, so I change dit from faastest to 48X Still didn't help.
I'm using windows XP media edition, if that helps at all.
Sonic Record Now doen't find the drive.
Neither does media edition when I try to record through it.
But I still can read CDs & DVDs.
I found an ardicle on it in the help & support which involves changing the registry, but it say sits for XP HOme & Professional. Doesn't say it's for XP Media.
What to do?

Try reinstalling Sonic.

I can't write to DVDs. I read DVDs can read and write to CDs. Dell diagnostics says my drive works fine. I found the old Sonic "Record Now!" in my program files and upon launch it implies that I need a $50 upgrade to back up my files. What is going on here? Can someone help?
I have a Diminsion 8400 and Sony CDRW/DVD CRX 330E. Shouldn't you be able to write to DVDs when you buy the drive from Dell?

Dumb me... never mind. It doesn't write to DVD, never will.
