Cannot create a viable shortcut to E drive

I have a Dimension 4600 with an E drive TEAC DVD+RW DV-W58E.

I cannot create a viable shortcut to the E drive. Could Sonic RecordNow's DLA be causing a problem? I have tried about 50 times by myself and also with the help of tech support to no avail.

Hi MargaretM,

You didn't tell how you are trying to do it.  Thus, no one here can advise you.
You have given no details.  So, I can only tell you how I do it.

I insert a know good CD into the drive.  If it autoruns, cancel the run but leave
the CD in the drive.  Go to My Computer and right click the drive and select Create
Shortcut.  It should tell you can not place a shortcut there and offer to place
it on the Desktop.  Place the Shortcut on the Desktop.

The trick is that something valid has to be in the drive for a shortcut to point at
during the creation process.  After this, it will point to the drive even when empty.
Hope this is helpful.

Dear Skybird:

Many thanks for your tip!  The reason I didn't describe the ways I've tried to create a shortcut to the E drive is that there are so many!  I tried going to My Computer and right-clicking on E; I tried dragging the icon to the desktop; I tried going to the desktop and right-clicking, then New, Shortcut, then following the prompts to create a shortcut.

I get the shortcut each time, but then, when I try to use it, I get a "Problem Shortcut" message saying "it has been changed or moved and do I want to delete the shortcut?"

Even Tech support (India) was unable to make it work.  Very frustrating, but not nearly as frustrating as the inability to add to DVD/R additional edited video clips after the first burn.

Is it working for you now with the method I suggested?

The error you kept receiving says the object the shortcut
was pointed to is missing.  Once you supply the object, the
created shortcut becomes valid.

Sorry to hear that didn't work.  Sounds like a tough one.  See if this

Dear Skybird:

Thank you so much for your repeated replies -- that is most good of you and I wish I had better news.

I tried to create the shortcut with a CD in the drive -- same result as all the other times.  I have tried to reinstall the driver for the E drive, but the computer says that it is ok as is.  Looks like I will have to take the long way to the E drive while I own this computer.

Again, Thank you Skybird!

I visited the link -- I may not have installed the updates -- this computer is new in February, but my husband, in a burst of valor, decided to keep up with updates, so who knows if we have the update that is causing the problem.  We ended up in a mess trying to update, with installations failing and taking forever to load, etc.  We decided that we wouldn't try to fix anything that was not broken.
