cannot run scan disk

I'm unable to run a scan disk on my Dimension 8200 - windows XP.
The message says something like "file is ntfs, cannot open volume", then continues on to start up windows.  I ran a full system diagnostic from the ResourceCD and everything checks out fine.  Computer issues all started after running Spybot. Restored all of the problems deleted with Spybot, then uninstalled it.  System restore will not work either.
Any clues?

what I mean is error checking - set the c-drive properties to check the volume on start-up
thanks

There is no scan disk in Windows XP.  Have you tried running chkdsk instead?

See if information at the following site helps you solve the problem.

yes, problem #2 on the xp chkdsk utility sounds about right.  it is a relatively new issue.  I'm currrent on windows updates, but have been hesitant to update to SP2.    There's mention on that document of restoring to last good configuration -- I tried that when this started and it wiped out my video driver.  if I'm reading correctly, perhaps SP2 will correct this? or maybe a registry cleaner utility program? am afraid of creating more problems by reloading or trying to repair XP.

if you want to check your disk for errors try this:

1. right click local disk C:

2. click properties

3. go to Tools

4. under error-checking click Check Now

5. and check the 2 check box. and click Run

6. it will ask you to run chkdsk after you Restart computer just click YES. and restart your computer.

and try to do system restore in safe mode just to be safe.
