Can't Access External HD
I just built an external Hard Drive kit using a brand new, in bag, unformatted 80 Gig IDE drive. When I first started the external device on my Inspiron 570 with Win 7, it was not recognized at all. After a reboot, Win 7 shows the drive as Y; but show is as full, there is no option to format the drive. So there it is, I just can't use it, now what ? I was expecting a format option, where is it ? Format Y: from command prompt did not work either.

PS; just tried it again, it did not recognize the external HD at all this time...

PROBLEM SOLVED- I pulled out the HD, put it in my old computer, used an old XP disc to format the drive, put it all back together and it's working. The drive had to be formated before Win7 would see it.

Do you have Windows 7? Did you check disk management?
