can't burn CD

I have a 3-year-old Dimesion 3000, Windows XP OS. I tried to burn a CD in MusicMatch Jukebox and it just spun a lot and wrote nothing (has worked before). I could not cancel the process or eject the disc, I had to reboot the system (2 different CD-R’s).

Also tried to click and drag files (mp3) to it (D drive) and when I told it to write the files to disc, it started up Windows Media Player(??!!), and again wrote nothing (CD-R and CD-RW). The drive can read discs, just not write to them. I looked at other posts, and this seems somewhat different, because i never see any error messages- like it doesn't realize it can't write.  Not sure if it's some sort of setting/configuration/driver, etc., or the physical burner is dead (5 days after warranty expired of course). Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi, Tim:

Please work through these standard troubleshooting steps first. This will refresh the drivers and make sure we're starting from a clean slate. Also check out this article for some steps to troubleshoot CD burning in XP.

When you post back, please look up the model of your drive in device manager and post that as well.

Osprey,

Thanks for your input. I tried a few of the steps on these pages that I thought might apply, to no avail. I eventually called Dell support and they determined that it was in fact the physical burner itself. I have ordered a new one. (Model HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8483B if that makes any difference at this point.)

Thanks again,
