Can't install Dell's new driver?

Hello All,
I have just received a File Watch from Dell regarding a fix for IDE and EIDE,Criticality: Critical.
After D/L I tried to install it the result was:  "Unable to run in windows, please use a DOS boot disk".
Any idea what should I do ??
TIA, Isaac

Bacillus,

I  ( the Inspiron:smileyhappy: ) do not have a floppy, but Dell sez that it can be installed on the HD (?)

Any ideas ?

Thanx again,

The alternative to a floppy is to make a bootable CDR with the updated patch file on it.

Thank you, Bacillus.

What I don't understand is why the download site (Dell) says that it can be installed on the HD if it can't?

And thanx again,

Isaac

That is a very good point but judging from the error message you received, it would appear that the update needs to run in DOS which is something lacking in XP.

Could you state exactly which update you are trying to install?

Bacillus,
This is the File Watch I received from Dell (and as said - it wouldn't let me install to the HD)

System model: Inspiron 9300
Criticality: Critical. Dell highly recommends applying this update as soon as possible. The update contains changes to improve the reliability and availability of your Dell system.
File Date: 2005-08-29
File Category: IDE and EIDE
Supported Devices: Western Digital-Scorpio 40GB 5400rpm Mobile HDD,Western Digital-Scorpio 60GB 5400rpm Mobile HDD,Western Digital-Scorpio 80GB 5400rpm Mobile HDD

however, I now found out that my HD is  NOT a WD but Fugitsu, so - maybe that is the reason ??
TIA,
Isaac

no, my is a WD, and I got same message as yours.

Dell's supervisor is lying to me because he said he can install that patch successfully.  I wanted him to send me screen shots, and he just told me to install an older firmware.  He is a shame to be a supervisor.
