Cd and DVD drivers are missing

Please help! I have a Dimension 5100 and yesterday noticed that neither my cd or dvd drive are being recognized. After troubleshooting, I get the yellow exclamation point with a an error code 37 device driver missing. I've downloaded the latest drivers from Dell and can not install them from the software they provide for unzipping the files because it does not read the drives and does not allow you to enter a letter for the drive. The back up disk that came with the drivers will not work from a reboot because of the drives not being recognized. Any suggestions will be appreciated. I've also tried uninstalling both drives, re-installing and rebooting but it didn't work. Don't know how or why this happened.

Thanks Predator, I'll give it a try. In the mean time, I've copied the backup cd that contains all the drivers to a USB memory stick and will try that as well. I'll get back to you and let you know how I make out. Have a great Christmas!

Hi Glf,

Code 37 is new version we have not seen, let try a couple of the standard steps.
Please click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 20, article 3. This reloads the IDE controller. If this does not help, then lets run the Dell article on the Upper & Lower Filters, same CD/RW link, Section 12, article 10 (Ignore the reference to Roxio)

Merry Christmas !

I'm suspecting a recent Microsoft update. I had the same thing happen to me. I've uninstalled and reinstalled DVD devices till I'm blue in the face. Unplugged and re-plugged. Switched cables around. Nothing.

My Dell 4100 won't recognize my Lite-on DVD drive.

So I swapped in an LG from an old XPS/T 600MHz system, and that fails too.

Have you installed any software recently other than the latest Microsoft updates?

I was also suspecting the Alcohol 120% software I recently installed.

Or perhaps the MAGIX Music Studio 2005.

Or ConvertXtoDVD. All recently installed before I realized I had no DVD Drive anymore.

Hi Digger,

Did you try the article on the Upper & Lower Filters? Even though it mentions Roxio, we have seen issues with a number of third party burning programs.
To test the drive per Dell, please click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll
to Section 12, article 3

Merry Christmas !

Thanks, Predator. The Upper & Lower Filter message did right by me. I'm back up and running.

Merry Christmas!

Predator
I tried the first part without success. I'm hesitant about removing upper and lower filters because I'm not that familiar with how to back up the registry files.

I have a new problem now. Although the drives now appear in the control panel and are working properly (after troubleshooting) neither drive recognizes a disc inserted (blank or one with data on it). Any suggestions?

Hi Gary,

I would go ahead and reload the IDE controller once more, same CD/RW link, Section 20, article 3. If this does not help, You may need to uninstall/reinstall your burning software. Some Members were able to check for and install the latest available update and that worked. One of the articles, maybe the Microsoft one, mentions after deleting the filters you may have to reinstall the burning software, the majority have not, but it is possible depending on ones luck ;)!
(with mine, I would expect the reinstall..lol...)

Merry Christmas !
