CD Rom causes computer to freeze
I just purchased a Dimension 4600. I have had this computer less than a week and have made no changes to the configuration. When I place a CD in the CD-rom drive the computer freezes and I need to restart. Once I restart I am able to access and run the CD. I have tried the CD's in 3 other computers and they all run, so I know it is not the CD. I am running Windows XP.
Thanks

Hi Ms Navy,
We can see if this is a driver issue, Click on the CD/RW gif in my post and scroll to Section 15, article 1 ~ Microsoft`s use of Device Manager;
Section 11, article 2 ~ Dell`s "Clearing the NVRAM"
Section 20, article 3 ~ Microsoft`s article on re-loading the Secondary Channel.
We have also seen a loose IDE cable cause this issue, open the case and re-seat the the IDE cable on the motherboards Secondary channel and the back of the drives.
For information on enterring the case and re-seatting, go to Section 4, same CD/RW link, drop down to Dell`s Specification pages for the 4600 and follow the link for Adding & Removing parts>
Happy Holidays!
God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones I do and the eyesight to tell the
difference.
