CD-ROM does not work
I have a HL-DT-ST CD-ROM GCR-8481B that came with my Dell 8200. A couple months ago i installled an NEC CD/DVD burner; inserted into the open bay and listed as "E" drive. My original D drive (old CD drive) did work. Recently nothing works in my CD-ROM drive. I ran througha ll the trouble shooting. I emailed Dell. I could not do 2 of the steps given in their email :
6. Re-install the IDE Controller Drivers
=============================
The problem may be caused by corrupt Windows driver files, especially IDE controller files. That can be solved by uninstalling and reinstalling these files:
* Shut down and restart Windows.
* As the computer is rebooting, press [F8] every few seconds to bring up the Windows Menu
* Choose Safe Mode and wait patiently while it loads.
* On the Safe Mode desktop do this:
* Hold down the Windows key (between the [Ctrl] and [Alt] keys on the left) and hit the [Pause\Break] key to open System Properties.
* Click [Hardware] | [Device Manager].
* Click the [+] to expand any categories marked with yellow or red symbols; these tell you that Windows is having problems with the category.
* One at a time, right-click devices under marked categories and choose Uninstall from the dropdown menu. Refuse any prompts to restart Windows.
* You may find multiple copies of devices in some categories. Uninstall the generic devices and keep the specific one.
* Expand the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers category whether it is marked or not; your CDROM drive is connected to one of these controllers.
* Right-click Intel PCI BusMaster IDE Controller and choose Uninstall.
* NOW shut down and restart Windows whether you are prompted to do so or not.
* As the computer reboots to Normal Mode, Windows should "rediscover" and reinstall fresh drivers for all the problem devices including the Intel BusMaster IDE controller. Try once more to read a disk. If you can, you're done. If you can't test the drive outside of Windows.
7. Run the Hardware Diagnostics
=============================
* Load the Dell Resource CD if you have one.
* Restart the computer.
* Press F12 after you see a Dell Logo or any printing on your screen.
* Choose Boot from CD if you have a Resource CD or Boot HDD utility if not.
* Highlight 32-bit diagnostics and press [Enter].
* Select Custom Test | CDROM\DVD
* Click [+] to open the Module | click the Optical device listed.
* If Optical Drive Built-in Self Test (OBIST)is listed choose that.
* Be sure the drive is empty (remove the Resource CD) and run the test.
* Make an exact copy of any fail messages or codes.
If you do not have a Dell Resource CD and your drive does have OBIST

I think it died ,^(
Now, I feel I should get another drive but just a CD player since my NEC does DVD. I want to only use my nec drive to just play DVD's, vcd;s and burn music and use the CDplayer to just play CD's and extract before burning.
