CD-Rom drive is being disconnected like its a flash drive??

Hello!

My mom bought me a beautiful new DVD and I've been unable to enjoy it because, for some strange reason, my CD tray won't open, and even after manually opening it with a paperclip and putting the dvd in, the disc won't read. Wow what a run-on.

I already did a BIOS diagnostic, and it went through my whole system and the CD drive shows no errors.

It specifically says this:

CDROM Drive: 0

OEM: TSSTcorp, product: DVD+-RW TS-U633J, revision: D600 WDC, S/N: should i share this?? lmao i think its fine but nah i wont

and this on another tab

** CDROM Drive 0 - Optical Device Built in Self Test **

Test Results : Pass

I exited out of the BIOS and started just whaling away on the eject button. It would open, I would close it, rinse, lather, repeat up until the computer had loaded my desktop. After the Welcome screen went away, I heard the little "ka dunk" sound your computer makes when a flash drive is being disconnected. I hovered over the Windows Explorerer icon and this showed up, the disconnection sound played, the icon went away, and after that, every time I hit the eject button, the tray wouldn't eject. :emotion-6: :emotion-6: :emotion-6:

It doesn't show up in the Device Manager,,,, not even a little exclamation point

I downloaded Intel Rapid Storage Technology (Pre-OS Install) Driver and TSST TS-U633J 9.5mm Tray SATA DVDRW Firmware Update but I'm pressed for time at the moment, so I haven't been able to do anything with them yet (I got an error, lucky me)

Specifically the error is when I run the TSST thing, it unzips the files, tells me they were successfully unzipped, and then tells me that the "Drive Can't be found."

ok,, so I continued anyway and I put the F/W File as U633JD600.bin and then it tells me "List index out of bounds (2)"

I dont know what to do!

I don't even know where to start!

All of this hulabaloo I've been paying more attention to when the drive is working and when it's not.

This led to me noticing that it disconnects when it's NOT plugged into a powersource.

I restarted, plugged it in, and it didn't disconnect. I put in a DVD and started to play it, unplugged the power and lo and behold, it disconnected. Theory proven.

It turns out that the power setting I prefer, "Extended Battery Life," which has a description that says it, "reduces the energy used and extends the run time of your battery by powering down non-essential ports and devices and adjusting display settings.

Powering down non essential ports and devices

OH MY GOD ARE YOU FOR REAL THIS IS WHY MY DRIVE HAS BEEN DISCONNECTING??

ALL THESE REGEDIT FIXES, FIRMWARE SOFTWARE BIOS UPDATES EVERYTHING I TRIED AND ALL I HAD TO DO WAS CHANGE MY POWER SAVER SETTINGS HOLY CANNOLI

it has been an entire day and a half since I noticed this and fixed the problem

It has not given me a problem since.

The scar had not pained Harry for nineteen years. All was well.

Hi Pupapan,

Please run the READ TEST on your DVD drive with a disc in the drive.

To test your CD/DVD drive from the utility partition:
1. Reboot your system. When you see the Dell logo, hit F12 to enter the boot menu.
2. Select Boot to utility partition or Diagnostics.
3. Select Test System.
4. Select Custom Test.
5. Use the arrow keys or mouse to select your CD/DVD drive.
6. Insert a CD or DVD.
7. Click Run Tests.
8. Write down any error messages.

Hello!

Oddly enough, the drive has stopped disconnecting, but is now permanently giving me the option to safely eject TSSTcorp DVD +- RW TS-U633J

I put my DVD in and it works perfectly but this is still really weird??

I don't just want to call it a day and say it's fixed, because I didn't do anything to fix it.

I tried to do what you said,,, but there were no options for a custom test or anything,,

When I hit F12 it gives me these options:

LEGACY BOOT:

Internal HDD

CD/DVD/CD-RW Drive

Onboard NIC

OTHER OPTIONS:

BIOS Setup

Diagnostics

And under Diagnostics, there are no options for a custom test,, you can press ESC to stop the diagnostic from doing a full scan, you can do a "Thorough test mode" and you can do individual tests. I did an individual test with and without a DVD in the drive, and it passed all tests on both accounts.

So I guess my goal now is to remove my CD/DVD drive from the Safely Remove Hardware list,,

Ok, good, so the hardware is working.

There is a registry fix to tell the OS your DVD drive is not a flash drive. Try the fix described here.

Hello!

I tried the link you gave me, and it didn't do anything,,,

I'm happy that it's working fine, but it was the fact that it was removable at all that started this whole mess,, I have no clue why it was disconnecting on its own. It had been doing that for a while?? But I don't use the cd tray often so I never realized what was being disconnected until yesterday lmao

Update on this situation:

If my computer goes into Sleep or Hibernation mode, the drive will disconnect when I wake my laptop up.

After I noticed this, I tried to open the cd tray just by pressing the eject button during Sleep mode and it didn't work.

ughghghghhhhhhhhh

@pupapan none of this helped me with my DVD player.  But now, at least I’m in a better mood 😁
