CD-ROM Drive Not Recognizing CDs

I have a CD-ROM drive that recognized a printer installation CD a few days back, but will recognize nothing since. I have tried using CD-ROM games, installation CDs, and others, but nothing works.

What will happen is I will put the CD in the drive. It will then begin spinning, stop, and will not autorun. I then attempt to access the drive via My Computer and it will sometimes recognize it for a short time, sometimes not. It will then give me a "Please insert a disk into Drive D" message or something another error that has the options "Continue, Try Again, Cancel" but will not leave the screen until I restart.

Any ideas?
