CD ROM, DVDRW Problems
I have read and printed out numerous posts by those of you who have figured out the problems with Dell CD ROMs and DVD/RWs and plan to use them when I attempt to restore and fix my girlfriend's fathers computer this weekend. My special thanks to Jeff, Predator and the others who are sharing their knowledge.
I have owned numerous desktop and notebook computers and I have never encountered these software and hardware issues that I am facing with this Dell. I have installed new hard drives, CD drives, set up my home network and installed more software than I can remember. I have simply never encountered the issues I have with this Dell computers malfunctions and certainly not on a "new" computer. I have Roxio Easy Media Creator version 6 installed on my non-Dell notebook and running Windows XP SP2 and have had no conflicts with the DVD/RW.
I do like to know how things work. Does anyone know why Dell has such a problem with factory installed CD, DVD/RW drives and pre-installed software not working. I truly ask this question with respect. Is this a fluke or is it a common problem? My girlfriends father is 70 years old and even if we can fix the problems with his CD drive not working we don't want to leave him with a computer that is going to have recurrent problems. Again, I am not slamming Dell because this is my first experience with a Dell. I would just like to know if we should try to fix this computer or replace it. Replacement will be at a significant costs to us but the peace of mind in making her father happy will be worth it.
Thanks again to all of you for the information. I'll keep reading and learning.

Obviously, when you come to a hardware message board, you're going to encounter lots of people having problems with their CD or DVD drives, so it's a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy. Since yours is a singular problem, it's a bit of a leap to extrapolate to all Dell systems or their optical drives.
BTW, I've owned or been a regular user of five Dells over the last eight years and have had one DVD-ROM drive replaced.

We're cool Osprey. I certainly hope we can get these issues resolved as well. I also appreciate people like you who take the time to post meaningful information. I don't know the answers at this point. I only know the questions. Perhaps someone can shed some light on why Dell is having these software conflicts when they are running Windows XP SP2. I would love to know the answer and I will post our results whether they are good or bad.
