Cd rom is found but does not work

Just bought a used Latitude C500 with Win 2k
the cd rom does not want to read any cds. whenever i try opening any cd it tells me: "Please insert a disk in to drive D:."
i dont have the original driver cd for the laptop, but even if i did the cd rom would not be able to read it.
Any ideas what this can be? is the cd rom done?
i have another latitude laptop and installed the cd rom in to that laptop. It does not work there either.. i get the same message.
i tried deleting it from the device manager, that did not help. Anythign else i am missing? any help would be appreciated,

this is what i tried so far:
1. set cd rom as main boot device - started booting from my cd rom Win2k disk, so it works
but still not able to read cds from windos.
2. Tries this Dell Article for Removing  the UpperFilters and LowerFilters Values with
the Registry Editor here .....................
still no luck, now get the message: D is not accesible, incorect function

Hi,

It may be the OS. Get a bootable CD, such as Windows and try to boot from it. F12 at the splash screen should force it to go to the CD. If it does boot [ dont start the load ] you have and OS issue stopping it. If not the hardware is faulty. Make sure the CD is enabled as a boot device, and if it doesnt seem to try, take out the HDD. Post back with the result.

thanks Chris,

i tried that and it does boot from the cd (win2k) disk.

Could it be that i have the wrong drivers installed? what/ and where is the correct driver. I was not able to find much on the dell site.

Hi,

A driver will only work after Windows has loaded. If you needed a driver, you would not be able to reload the HDD. It sounds like your CD is faulty

if the cd rom was faulty i would not be able to boot from it... it seems to work in dos, but does not in windows..
another strange thing i noticed.. i was trying to upgrade the bios (mine is A16) and put in the a: drive, it does not read the a: drive either.
it seems like i cant even update the bios unless i install the files strait to the HD and run them from there.. which is not the best option.

i am going to borrow a friends CD rom and see if that works,
then maybe try to install XP and see if that fixes it.
let me know if you have any other ideas....

Hi,

You are right, I was thinking of something else........If you update the Bios, do it via a bootable floppy. Not from Windows. Even with no hard drive, you can boot from either the CD or floppy. [ to do Bios updates for example ] An option may be to load Windows over itself, this will keep all settings and data. It doesnt always work, so back-up what you need to keep.
