CD-ROM not working

This all starts when my Norton anti-virus stopped working suddenly, after much trouble-shooting via the Norton web site, they said to remove all Norton anti-virus and security software.  When that was completed I attempted to re-install my software, much to my suprise my CD-ROM is not working.  Hardware config has a large yellow exclemation point.
Warning message says that the driver is not working.
Removed the driver, re-installed the driver.  Same issue. (not working, yellow exclamation point).
Removed the driver, re-started the computer, found new hardware, automaticly installed driver, same issue.
Installed XP service pack 2, found new hardware, etc, etc, same issue.
Removed the driver, cleared the CMOS, re-started windows, found new software, etc, etc, same issue.
Dell Demension 2350, Hitch CD-ROM not a DVD.  Until now had no issues.
I did have 3 Trojon horses that Norton removed (during my troubleshooting with Norton anti-virus)

any ideas?
