cd/dvd combo dimension 4600

Question

i relaced my cd drive with a cd/dvd combo from sony the CRX 360. i have not changed or added anything else.everything is ok apart from the fact that it will not play a dvd.i have used the troubleshooter but that has not helped.as i am no expert can i ask anyone to answer these two questions;  1.do i need to install any software( i have fusinsoft dvd player and windows player)  2.is it likely that the player is faulty and needs replacing   thanks

To play a DVD, you have to have DVD decoder software installed.  The twomost popular are WinDVD and PowerDVD.  Did one of those come with thedrive?

Hi Edenman,

I could not find any reference for the 360, found a 320 though...
However Dell ships their systems using the Cable Select jumper feature, so did you set the small plastic jumper on the back of the drive over the pins marked for Cable Select?
Also in order to play DVD`s, you will need some type of decoding software, example PowerDVD or WinDVD.
Windows Media Player require a third party codecs to play DVD`s.

thanks Predator for your prompt reply.my mistake its a crx 320 it came with no leads or software.i will have a look at the back of the drive unit for the cable select feature.i do not have power dvd or win dvd.i have downloaded fusionsoft dvd player xp from download.com.is this the same sort of software.the dvd does load but before any pictures appear the fusionsoft player closes down

after a few hours on this site i have fixed my dvd problem.thanks to predater and skybird.the fault was that i needed to download windvd.the free trial download has sorted it .now if you could only give me the winning numbers for the lottery !!!!!!!  thanks again
