CD/DVD drive does not recognize any discs

Question

CD/DVD+RW drive does not recognize any discs (CD,DVD,blank or original). Had just copied a disc and it worked fine, inseted another blank to make a second copy and it says to 'insert blank disc', tried several discs and it does not recognize any discs now. Green light on drive flashes a couple times when disc is inserted. Turned off PC and removed side panel, found wire harness going from D drive to E drive (DVD/RW drive) had came unplugged, plugged wire harness back in and restarted computer, but it still would not recognize discs. Updated the driver from Dell website and still does not work???   Dell Dimension E521 TSST corp DVD+RW TS-H553a

By driver, do you mean you updated the firmware? Does the BIOS show the drive correctly?

Yes I updated the firmware & the Bios shows the drive correctly.

Please work through these standard troubleshooting steps. Sometimes reinstalling the IDE channel and drive will help.

went through the 5 troubleshooting steps. after step 4 (clearing the NVRAM) dvd/cd drive still not recognizing discs, so i assume it is time to replace. now in 'my computer' it shows that i have a floppy drive, but my pc does not have a floppy drive. what is going on???

When you cleared NVRAM, your BIOS reset your floppy controller to on. Boot to the BIOS (F2) and turn it off.   If you ran the Dell diagnostics with a data CD-ROM disc in the drive, did it show an error of any sort?

Time to replace that drive. Contact Dell if your system is till under warranty.
