CD/DVD Drive won't read or eject disk

The same generic driver is used for all optical drives, so updating the driver is not going to work. Please follow your link to the MS article and follow step #3, the manual registry edit. That will fix this.

I followed step #3 which didn't work but step #5 worked.  When I put in  a music CD, the CD shows in windows explorer and plays in realplayer  WMP (Windows Media Player) shows the CD, when you play a track you get a red circle with a X in the middle. Itunes say there is no audio CD found.  I don't know if there is no Upper or Lower Registry key it woulld cause problems in playing CD's in WMP and Itunes?

That's strange. There was another thread on the same problem, audio CD only played in Realplayer, not WMP or iTunes. The upper and lower filter entries do not affect audio discs. I don't have or use Realplayer so I can't say I know how to solve this.

I access the registry through HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}  When I remove the UpperFilters the disk ejects and reads through Windows Media Player, Itunes 10 but doesn't not play songs, but plays songs through RealPlayer. With Itunes 10 seems like if I don't have GEARAspiWDM in UpperFilters I get the message "The registry settings used by the ITunes drivers for importing and burning CD's and DVD's are missing.  This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall iTunes."  This is a screen shot of my registry for my CD/DVD rom drive.

I don't know how much this will help because each system is unique in exactly how it is set up and I am not having this issue.  But I thought I'd post my regedit screen so you'd have something to compare it to.  REMEMBER!  Don't play around with the registry unless you are willing to live with the consequences.  Also!  Always EXPORT your entire registry before making changes.  This is so you can come back up in safe mode and re-IMPORT your saved registry if you need to.  Anyway - here is my screen shot.

Note the lack of the "Icon" line in your listing and there are other differences.  I don't mind editing my own registry because I always make backups upon backups before doing anything.  But this is one of those "I'm not sure what is going on" kind of things.  So I do not have (or make or imply) any changes you should be making.  Just a little something for your to compare against.  What you need now are a couple of other people to show what their registry entries look like (like Osprey1's system) so you can see what others have and can come to some kind of a conclusion on what you need to do.

You also might want to go ask on the Microsoft Community web page.  Since this is a MS OS problem - they would probably be better able to help you rather than a Dell oriented problem.  (And no - I do not work for Dell or Microsoft.  In fact - I'm looking for a job.  Know of any?  :-) )

I tried going into control panel clicked hardware and sound and found speakers/headphones and Independent headphones checked, which I unchecked Independent headphones which left me with speakers/headphones as the only item checked in Sound which solved this problem.
