CD/DVD not recognizing
since few days the DVD+RW drive is not recognizing the CDs and this is happening very regularly. sometimes there seems to be no problem.
when i open explorer and see the drive it does not show the cd name and the folder is empty as if no cd has been put in the drive. i tried some methods already posted in the forum but no result.
i actually shut down the machine and removed the drive and then put it back again. did not work
when i put a CD, i can see three low tak-tak sound coming from the drive and then its all gone. i have seen when there is only one tak sound then its able to rotate the disk ans play it.
pls help me coming out of this problem.
i have a I 8600 machine.

yes my driver used to work before. i am scared at hearing that 3 tak-tak sound which comes from the drive. with 1/2 sound the drive is working fine!
how to get hold of the Dell techies on this forum? do they reply periodically copy/pasting the same answers for all or do they actually see and understand the problem?
How much does an internal DVD+RW drive costs in USD?

I have the same problem! and whenever i go to anyone online or on the phone for tech support they all tell me the same thing and nothing gets fixed!
i want to update my d drive because it's such a hassle.
i just dont know if it is possible, and when i went to chat with support, they wouldnt give me a straight answer!
it's rather frustrating... let me know if you find anything out.

My first drive gradually degraded until it would not read a disk when put in. The second drive worked for a month and went pretty much straight to dead. The second drive is an NEC (5500a I think).
If you're still under warranty send it in to have it repaired. I think there is some other problem that is killing the drives. Forget about Dell support finding a problem it has to go into the shop for real diagnostics.
I am also starting to question the design of the slimline drives. Most of the electronics are pushed out with the tray so they are subject to static, dirt and other environmental hazards everytime it is used. Don't know about everyone else but ever notice how the tray bends and twists as discs are installed and removed?
As far as getting something that works as you'd expect, next time I'll try Gateway.
