cd/dvd player not playing cd

Question

I put a disc into my cd/dvd drive and nothing happens.  When I double click on the d drive it tells me to insert a disc. Which I have already done.  The light on the drive just blinks but nothing happens.  i want to install a new program for my new camera but i cant.  What could the problem be.  Any suggestions?

I am having the same problem with my DVD Drive. I have a Dimension C521. I put in a cd, the light turns on, I hear the running sound. A couple seconds later the drive stops. I went to the windows explorer, My Computer and I don't see the drive icon. I contacted Dell and they sent me a replacement in a couple days. I replaced the drive with the one that was sent to me but it did not work.   I search for answers in the Device Manager I double click TSST corp DVD+-RW TS-H653A and the message says 'Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)'

Hi Asan2san,It may just be a driver issue, please click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 15, article 1 and run those steps.Also my friend, it would help at times if we had a tad more information;What Dell system do you have, what Operating system, name/model of the drive in question, what type of disc, CD or DVD?Happy New Year ! Oh gee, you have the dreaded the GWA-4164B drive.
Click on the Dell FAQ at the top of this page and scroll down to Standard Troubleshooting steps for CD/DVD drives.
See if anything there will help, including the firmware update.

Hi Asan2san,Unfortunately this drive has not faired well at all. Dell released two firmware updates, I dare maybe one or two replied back that it helped.I would run the FAQ, shutdown open the case and reseat (unplug/replug) the IDE cable going from the motherboard to the back of the drive. This cover most everything, sadly I wish I could give you the 'why' but drives do fail, some last longer than others.Happy New Year ! Sorry Pillar Dimension E310 Windows XP name and model of drive:? how about this I did the f12 and this came up Drive 1 no device drive 2- hl-dt-st dvd+/-rw gwa4164b-diagnostic not supported drive 3 no device   it will not accept any type of cd music, programs movies.  When go to properties and it so it is working properly. I will try your advice.

O gee that doesnt sound good what is wrong with that driver?  And what do you think could be wrong with mine.  Like I said, it use to work fine and now you put the disc in and the light just blinks and nothing happens.  I double click on d drive and it opens and nothing is there.   I'll try what you suggested.  I have tried everything else. Thanks.

Ok well I tried the firmware update no go and I tried the section 15 and no go.  so now i guess i just call dell and they replace it.  Wonder what that sets me back on top of what Im still paying for the darn thing that is just over a year old.  thanks for your in sight and if there is anything else I can try besides calling dell please let me know.

Hi Asna2san,If you are under warranty, then it will cost you nothing. Also I suggest you be polite but firm and respectfully request a non-GWA 4164B replacement. Dell can do this.If you are out of warrnty, for on-line shopping give New Egg a try.Any standard IDE DVD+/-RW drive on the market today should work fine in your system. Ok, so they all come in a standard size and they are easy to install.  Im computer literate to a point but not so much when it comes to the workings of the computer.  I can just order a cd/dvd drive and it will fit my computer?  and it comes with directions?  No, Im not quit a total idiot!  Thanks for your help.

Hi Asan2san,Did not forget you my friend, just took a mini-vacation.Yes the drives are easy to install, yes you need a standard IDE drive, not a 'Slimline' or a 'SATA' drive.A tip, Dell uses the Cable Select jumper setting, not Master/Slave, so set the jumper on the new drive to CS or CSEL.Here is a nice link about the jumpers:http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-6603_7-5118840-4.html?tag=txtHere is your User Manual with instructions for Adding and Removing CD/DVD drives.E310Happy New Year !
