Computer doesn' ecognize CD RW

This is my first post- so if I did things wronmg, please help me to do it right the next time

I got my new Dell 2400 last week. It has a cd-R dribe and a CD-RW drive

The CD-rW is a HL-DT-ST- GCE 8483 B

If I turn my Computer off by clicking the re-start icon the R-W drive does not show up when the computer restarts.

If I klick the "Turn off Computer" icon the machine shuts down properly and then when I press the button on the tower to start my computer again the CD-RW icon turns on an d the machine recognizes the drive.

I have talked to Dell twice. They have not helped

muckel,

Welcome to the Dell Community Forum (DCF).
* Click Start- Shutdown- Shutdown- Ok or Click Start- Turn Off Computer- Turn Off
* Turn on your computer, and watch the keyboard lights. As soon as they flash, press the F2 key
* The message, Entering Setup should appear
* Press the [Caps Lock], [Scroll Lock] and the [Num Lock] keys to light up all three lights on the keyboard
* Press the [Alt] and keys at the same time. The system will emit a beep tone to indicate that NVRAM has been cleared
* Down arrow to Integrated Devices [press Enter]
* Set everything to On except for USB Emulation which should be set for NO BOOT
* Press the [Esc] key, and then [press Enter] to save the changes and reboot the system

Thank you for the prompt reply. Unfortunately it did not solve the problem. I executed all the steps several times. I did reset USB Emulation to No Boot. The only place where I might have goofed is that your instructions say to make sure that all three lights are lit on the keyboard. I have a wireless keyboards and I have not found any light for the scroll lock. But since I did everything several time I would think that the scroll lock would have been in the correct position once

Hi Muckel,

Dell-ChrisM had you Clear the NVRAM, click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 11, article 2 for additional information on this. Review article 1 in this Section too.
We have also seen a loose connection cause this as well, open the case and re-seat the IDE cable going from the motherboard to the back of the drives on the Secondary Channel.

Additional steps, same CD/RW link, Section 20, article 3.

Best Regards

God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones I do and the eyesight to tell the
difference.
