Computer Not Recognizing CD/DVD Drive

I've noticed a lot of posts about this. Mainly because I was searching for a solution to my problem. I tried some of the suggestions on here, but they didn't work. I even spent one hour online with Dell Chat and they couldn't fix it. There solution was that my drive was damaged. Out of desperation I tried this and it worked, so I thought I would share it. First, my problem was that my computer all of a sudden did not recognize that I had a CD/DVD Drive. It just wasn't there. Then, it was there but with a yellow ! beside the drive. I tried this and it fixed it.

  1. Click on MY COMPUTER
  2. Right Click the C Drive
  3. click the TOOLS Tab
  4. You should see ERROR-CHECKING. Click CHECK NOW.
  5. Check the boxes "Automatically fix file system errors" and "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors"

It was necessary for the computer to restart. After it finished and restarted, my CD/DVD drive was back and working properly.

Hope this helps.

I have the same problem with the yellow (!) and even using these steps I still can't get the drive to work. I have also used the windows recommended fix by uninstalling & reinstalling the drive, but still no luck; once it is reinstalled it just shows the same problem.

I am worried that if I attempt reinstall windows then I will not be able to install any of my software.

Any other ideas here? Maybe throw it out and get a newie!

Look in the Device Manager .........

Click on the (+) next to DVD/CD-ROM drives.  Right-click the drive and select Properties.
Is there an Error Code (number) present?
