Crashed Harddive - Data Recovery

Hi,
My harddrive has crashed, although I did have some files backed up alot of them I did not.  I took my computer to the Geek Squad and they could not recovery any of my files, they did give me another option that they informed me "might" work . They told me that they could send the failed drive off to a company that could open the drive in a clean room and try to recover my data.  They also informed me that this was not guaranteed and could become quite expensive.  I am not computer savy at all and was just wondering if anyone has ever had to have this done, if the odds were good, or even close and if you knew ballpark wise what I should expect to pay for something like this.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as I am desperate to get the information back.  Thank you!

Data recovery firms have generally excellent track records; expect to pay $2,500 or more for the service.
