Deleteing the Unknown Partition (Restore Image)

Question

Hi all,

Did anyone do this? Durring the future, let say that I want to get rid of the restore image file that is store in my hd. Is it safe to do? I want 3.5 GB as for my personal use. I am pretty advance computer user and I already got the Windows XP installation CD. If it is safe to do, how do I reformat the hard drive and put it into one big hd?

Many decide to recover that area.  Boot to the XP cd, delete all partitions, make the partitions you want, format and load.

Thanks for your reply. Since it is going to delete all of the partitiion, what about the EISA Configuation partition? do i still really need it? JC

No that partition holds the Dell diagnostic program which you also got on the Drivers and Utilities CD.

If you have and know how to use Partition Magic, you can eliminate the partition without reinstalling.  Allen T.

Yeah, I was wondering about that program. I heard Partition Magic but I never use it. How does it work? JC

PM works really well, especially if you like to keep things organized by partitioning. I'm not sure how it really works, but you can do all sorts of different functions to a drive without losing data. Most of the other disk utilities will delete your stuff. I've used PM since it came out and have never lost a bit of data. It is very powerful and you must understand what you are doing. You must read the manual or problems WILL happen.

Since it sounds like you are a student and need your notebook until the semister ends, and have not used PM before, I would recommend waiting.  I tried PM under W98 and thats how I ended up with W2k!!      I made a pending change, thought I'd cancelled it, made the new change, started the tasks, and it did all I had asked, not what I'd intended, and the drive was a total loss.  Thats when I bailed to 2k.  Something to think of.  Also back up your data and email before trying PM whenever you choose to.
