Dell D400 Bootable Image Cd
Dear All,
In our IT department we always use image files to setup new notebooks. Our old standard was Dell Latitude C400 but now we have upgraded it to Dell Latitude D400. But in this model we have serious problems about booting from Cd. When I use my old bootable cds the system boots but can't recognize the cd-rom. So I can't be able to restore the image files. We use Norton Ghost as image program. I have tried all the settings in norton to make a bootable ghost disk but I can't succeed.
I downloaded the dos drive of the cd-rom but I can't use it. Could you please help me to create a bootable ghost cd?
Kind regards...

Did you ever get your CD boot image to work on the D400s
I have not been able to get a bootable ghost CD to work on the D400 USB CDRW/DVD either (works ok on the D800).
I have tried using the suggested config.sys and autoexec.bat and have updated the bios too.
[config.sys]
DOS=HIGH,UMB
lastdrive=Z
device=HIMEM.SYS
devicehigh=USBASPI.SYS /v /w
devicehigh=DI1000DD.SYS
devicehigh=USBCD.SYS /d:USBCD001
[Autoexec.bat]
@echo off
LH MSCDEX /d:USBCD001 /L:X
echo Loading...
\GHOST\GHOST.EXE -clone,mode=load,src=X:\D400-1.gho,dst=1 -sure
I keep getting the error "USB device not found"
I have tried other USBASPI(X).SYS device drivers but this
one is the one dell says works (but not for me).

I found this driver on the dell web:
http://support.dell.com/filelib/download.aspx?FileID=67289&releaseid=r56407
This driver adds the ability to access USB and IEEE-1394 optical drives (e.g. CD-ROM/CD-RW/DVD- ROM) from DOS. For example, to access an optical drive in a Dell D/Bay, D/Dock module bay, or IEEE- 1394 connection.
Use this driver in your CONFIG.SYS to access your optical drive from DOS. Example:
device=extcd.sys /d:extcd001
Configure AUTOEXEC.BAT with MSCDEX.EXE. Example:
mscdex.exe /d:extcd001 /m:15 /l:r

By the way the name of the file at the Dell web site is:
R56407.EXE
at:
http://support.dell.com/filelib/download.aspx?FileID=67289&releaseid=r56407
Just in case.

Did it work to create an image file to CD, or to read the image file from CD?
What version of Ghost do you use?
Thank you!

I created the image with the floppy DOS Boot Disk (in both host and remote) Peer-to-Peer connection with a crossover cable connected by the NICs (Using Norton Ghost 2003).
So I had the image already, and copied it to my CD. The problem was that I could not make the CD bootable with the D400 USB CD-RW/DVD. The boot CD I created for the D800 could not see (No Device Found) the USB CD.
So.... the Driver from dell configures the CD to boot to the USB CD.
Hope my rambles make sense.

Thank you for your quick response!
I was able to read the image with Ghost 8 from the CD on my D400 after I used the extcd.sys driver, but Ghost does not see the CD-R when I try to create the image directly to it.
It looks like the Samsung CDRW/DVD SN-324F USB drive is not supported by Ghost 8.
I was curios if any other version of Ghost supports this drive.

I know Ghost 2003 can create a D400 image directly to the USB CD-R (Ghost 2003 Backup Option) because I tried it before I got the other method to work.
When I created the CD bootable, it boot right up and re-imaged my D400 without any problem.
I didn't go that route because I did want a copy of Ghost 2003 on my image.
I have not tried any other version of Ghost on these D400/D800s.
P.S.
My D400 comes with the
"QSI CDRW/DVD SBW-242 USB Device"
so I'm not sure about the Samsumg but it should work.

I do not want to be a pest, but I would like to ask you one more question.
What brand is that QSI CDRW/DVD SBW-242 USB device, or what is the Dell part number?
I plan to ask Dell to replace my Samsung with your model.
Thank you!

I believe the manufacturer is "QSI". The Dell Part Number for the USB D/Bay is "P0690 A01". Model Number PD01S
The Part Number for the CD-RW/DVD is "7C394 A00"
We just got these Laptops about 2 weeks ago.

This driver works well for me as well, but I've noticed that no matter what device name you give it with the /d: parameter, it always uses EXTCD001. We have a universal boot disk that attempts to load multiple drivers using the generic MSCD001 device name and this makes the MSCDEX driver require a separate load just for the EXTCD001.
Does anybody know a way around that?

I was looking at this issue for a customer of mine and got it to work.
The problem they were seeing is that they booted from a CD on a D800 and could not find the USB floppy.
I downloaded the USB DOS driver from
and modified my config.sys file by adding
device=A:\extcd.sys /d:wdl-usb
Hope this helps.

Hi WParsons,
Did the driver actually manage to load using the device name "wdl-usb", and also, what parameters did you use on your MSCDEX.EXE call?
Thanks!

It actually did load using the "wdl-usb" device name. I have tested it several times.
The parameters that I used on my MSCDEX.EXE call is listed below.
LH A:\MSCDEX.EXE /D:EXTCD001 /L:%CDROM_LETTER% | A:\DOSTee.com /a %RAMLog%
Hope this helps.
