Dell hard drive issues

My hard Drive is not being recognized by the phoenix bios 2.1.0. The hard drive works in an external but not in laptop. insipron 1501. The dvd was found but the hard drive is not. Reseated the drive to see if it was a connection issue but still not found. Is the hard drive dead? When I run Fdisk with a boot disk it is found. what gives?? I ams trying to install an operating system but it will not install without the drive being available.

Your boot medium MUST have the SATA controller drivers on it, or you must set the BIOS type for the drive to ATA compatible, NOT AHCI.

I would love to but there is one problem. I don't know how. I went to the phoenix bios setup utility and I have disabled the boot froo removable devices and the broadcom pxe. The only devices available are the hard drive and CD-Rom. There is no longer a plus sign next the hard drive to display the model number. Under the advance tab the only thing disabled is the quickboot mode. boot time diag, usb outside port, on board lan, wireless control, ans usb legacy is enabled. Dell Inspiron 1501 Specs. Bios: Phoenix Dell Bios 2.1.0 Cpu: Amd Turion 64 DVD: tsstcorp dvd+/- rw ts (Toshiba ts-l632) HDD: ST98823AS (80gb 5400 rpm firmware 8.04) Mem: 2gb DDR2 (1964032kb) I don't know how to get a hold of a flash for the bios. I can't seem to find the HDD controller either. please help.
